How Big is Your Forest?

Merriam-Webster's Dictionary offers this basic definition of a forest: a dense growth of trees and underbrush covering a large tract. I feel there is so much more. In my years of travel, through many forests, I have been searching for an answer, that we can all relate to. It has recently occurred to me that a forest is not how many trees you saw, not how many species counted, nor is it how big those trees were, but how you remember them.

Joel & Sierra in their forest - image

When my son Joel was three he went exploring in  a small patch of six foot maples. When he returned he was so excited, really excited, to tell me about his trip through the forest.  I said to him, “Where were you Joel?“, "I was in the forest!”, he said, eyes wide with excitement. To Joel it wasn't’ just a small patch of 6 foot maples it was a long journey through  a wonderful world that was just his.

So the forest I believe, is just that, the reasons that we there, and what was given to our memory. It is a place to dream, a place to listen to the sound of a loon or a hawk floating high an invisible breeze and a place, to sit and hear the wind, with all its different sounds as it passes through the needles and leaves of our ever-changing seasons.

So I believe  a forest is a place for all stages of life, a place where when we feel small as we enter our worlds expands and we can dream of wonderful things.

What do you dream of when you walk through the woods?
